About New Smyrna Beach, Florida
New Smyrna Beach is a city of 30,142 people in Volusia County, on the Indian River with the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Europeans first settled here in 1768, when Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish doctor and a friend of East Florida's British governor, James Grant, started the colony of New Smyrna. He named it for Smyrna, the Ottoman city where his wife, Gracia Dura Bin, was born; her father was a Greek merchant in London.
Turnbull brought in about 1,300 settlers, most of them Catalan-speaking people from Menorca, with Greeks from the Mani peninsula among them, to raise hemp, sugarcane and indigo and to make rum. The colony shipped plenty of indigo at first, but disease, raids and harsh treatment by Turnbull and his overseers broke it apart. About 600 survivors walked nearly 70 miles up the King's Road to St. Augustine and stayed there, and after Florida went back to Spain in 1783, Turnbull left for Charleston.
- Rebuffed a Union landing in 1862During the Civil War, on March 23, 1862, men of the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment drove off a small U.S. naval force trying to come ashore near New Smyrna. In 1863 Union gunboats returned and shelled the town's Stone Wharf.
- The railroad came in 1892New Smyrna had just 150 people when it was incorporated in 1887. Five years later Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway began serving the town, and the population grew fast as tourists joined the citrus growers and commercial fishermen. In 1947 the city took in the seaside community of Coronado Beach and became New Smyrna Beach.
- Rum runners in the 1920sDuring Prohibition, moonshiners set up stills on the river islands, and smugglers hid there after bringing liquor from the Bahamas through Mosquito Inlet, the passage now called Ponce de LeΓ³n Inlet.
- A top surf townSurfer magazine put New Smyrna Beach at number nine among its best surf towns in July 2009, and National Geographic listed it among the world's top 20 surf towns in 2012. The waves draw sharks too: in 2008 the town set a record of 24 shark bites, though very few bites here are fatal.
- Racing since 1967The New Smyrna Speedway, a paved half-mile track, opened in 1967. It hosts the ARCA Menards Series East, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
