About Ponce Inlet, Florida

Ponce Inlet is a town of 3,364 people in Volusia County, at the southern end of a barrier island below Daytona Beach Shores. The Halifax River runs along one side of it and the Atlantic Ocean along the other, and water covers 10.3 of the town's 14.7 square miles. Until 1927 the inlet beside the town was called Mosquito Inlet.

The first lighthouse at the inlet went up on the south side in 1835, but the oil for its lamp never arrived. Fighting in the Second Seminole War damaged the tower, and it collapsed a year later. Builders started a new light on the north side in 1883, and it was finished and first lit in 1887. At 175 feet, it stands taller than any other lighthouse in Florida.

  • A post office in 1867After the Civil War, John Milton Hawks founded a settlement for freed African Americans. Its first post office opened in 1867 on ground that is now part of Ponce Inlet, and a year later the office was moved a few miles to the north.
  • Rowing toward the lightIn 1897 the writer Stephen Crane was aboard the SS Commodore when it went down off the Florida coast. He and several of the crew took to a small dinghy and rowed toward the inlet's light, and Crane later turned the ordeal into his short story "The Open Boat."
  • The town kept its lighthouseIn 1970 the Coast Guard left the lighthouse station, putting up a new beacon at New Smyrna Beach instead. Pressed by worried residents, the Town of Ponce Inlet took over the property in 1972, and a preservation association was formed to run it as a museum. High-rise buildings later hid the Coast Guard's beacon across the inlet, so the old light went back into service in 1982.
  • A landmark since 1998The Ponce De Leon Inlet Lightstation was named a National Historic Landmark on August 5, 1998, one of just eleven lighthouses to hold that title. Visitors can climb the tower, and the museum displays the old lenses that once lit it.
