About South Daytona, Florida

South Daytona is a city of 12,865 people in Volusia County, on the Halifax River with Daytona Beach to its north. It began as Blake, a settlement named for Alpheus P. Blake, a wealthy businessman from Boston. About forty families lived there, and roughly as many owners held land without living on it. Many of the early settlers made money raising oranges and vegetables.

In 1926 Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze joined to form one city, Daytona Beach, which then annexed the land around it, Blake included. The annexation brought new taxes and appraisals, so Blake's residents hired an attorney to fight it. Around 1938 they won their separation and became the incorporated town of South Daytona, and the town became a city in 1951.

  • Mail and railsBlake's first post office opened for business on August 19, 1878, according to the National Archives. Trains reached Daytona around 1886, and a decade later the line ran on to Miami. Not long after that, a railroad station went up at Big Tree Crossing.
  • Building up after the warSoon after World War II, the town formed a Building Department and then a Planning and Zoning Board. Builders and developers took notice, and South Daytona grew enough to ask the federal government for help expanding its utilities and streets. Only Daytona Beach put in a sanitary sewer system in the Halifax area before South Daytona did.
  • A city manager since 1980South Daytona has been governed by a city manager and council since 1980. Starting in 1990, the mayor and four council members have served four-year terms that are staggered so they don't all end at once.
