About Newberry, Florida

Newberry is a city of 7,342 people in the southwest corner of Alachua County, along the Gilchrist County line. Phosphate turned up in the western part of the county in the 1880s, and the town grew around the mines that dug it. In 1893 the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railway pushed its tracks south from High Springs, so the mining town also became a railroad stop and a trading center.

By 1896 fourteen mines were at work close by. The town's hotels, boarding houses and saloons served a rough crowd of workers who drifted in and out. Germany bought most of Newberry's phosphate, so when war was declared against it in 1914, the trade stopped almost overnight and many jobs were lost. Newberry turned to farming instead and had its greatest success with watermelons.

  • First called NewtonWhen the town's post office opened in March 1894, it carried the name Newton. That August the name was changed to Newberry, and it has stayed Newberry ever since.
  • Watermelon Festival since 1946Watermelons became the crop that carried Newberry after the phosphate trade ended. The town first held its Watermelon Festival in 1946, a year after World War II ended, and it still celebrates the festival every year.
  • First Black mayor in 1984In 1984 Newberry's voters chose Freddie Warmack as the city's first Black mayor. He carried 60 percent of the white vote, a sign of how race relations in the town had changed since the late 20th century began.
  • An Olympic archery centerThe Easton Newberry Sports Complex covers 100 acres and is run by the Easton Foundation's archery center together with the city's parks and recreation staff. The United States Olympic Committee picked it as a Community Olympic Development Program, one of only 10 in the country chosen for archery, and it trains archers and coaches of every level. Nearby Champions Park, opened in June 2013 as Nations Park, has 16 fields, and more than 30,000 people visit it each year.
