About Newport, Kentucky

Newport is a city of 14,150 people in Campbell County, set where the Licking River flows into the Ohio across from Cincinnati. James Taylor Jr. settled here around 1791, on land his father, James Sr., had bought from George Muse, who had received it as a grant. The name honors Christopher Newport, captain of the first ship to reach Jamestown in 1607, rather than the river setting. Newport became a town on December 14, 1795, and on February 24, 1834, it was incorporated as a city.

The army had already moved its Ft. Washington post out of Cincinnati in 1803, bringing it across the river as the Newport Barracks. A bridge linked Newport with Covington in 1853, and in 1866 the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge became the first span over the Ohio to Cincinnati. Large numbers of Germans settled in the city in the 1880s and '90s, and by 1900 Newport was Kentucky's third largest city, behind only Covington and Louisville.

  • The steel strike of 1921After World War I the steel business slumped, and in 1921 more than 2,000 mill workers walked out, one in five of the town's workers, seeking recognition for three unskilled union locals. The company armed the mill with machine guns, and state militia and later tanks stayed in town until late 1922. The strike was partly broken by then, but it formally ended only in 1928, without recognition.
  • The flood of 1937Newport's worst natural disaster came in 1937, when floodwater spread across much of the city. A flood wall was finished in 1948, and it still shapes the look of the riverfront today.
  • From Sin City to the LeveeUpscale gambling casinos on Monmouth Street once earned Newport the nickname "Sin City." Racketeering investigations drove them out, and in the 1980s and 1990s the city set out to draw families instead. The $40-million Newport Aquarium opened in May 1999, and the historic Posey Flats apartments were torn down to make room for Newport on the Levee, which opened the next year.
  • Two county seatsNewport held the seat of Campbell County for two stretches, 1797 to 1823 and 1824 to 1840. Most residents lived in the north and disliked the trip to Alexandria, so in 1883 Newport won a special state law that let it build a second courthouse. A 2009 ruling named Alexandria the only seat, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals gave Newport equal status on November 24, 2010, and the state Supreme Court declined review in 2011.
