About Niantic, Connecticut
Niantic is a village of 3,194 people in the town of East Lyme, on Long Island Sound. For a long time the flat land along its shore held only scattered farms, but fishing changed that in the mid 1800s. Up to 50 vessels sailed out of Niantic, and most of them went after halibut and cod on George's Bank.
The village center grew along with the fleet. Only two buildings stood on today's Main Street in 1839, but there were 32 by 1867. The boom did not last, because by 1880 the fishing grounds at George's Bank were mostly fished out, and fishing stopped being a major business in Niantic.
- Boatyards on the Niantic RiverNew businesses sprang up quickly to serve the fishing fleet. Boatyards went up along the Niantic River, and other merchants supplied the boats with cord wood, ice and bait.
- Golden pink graniteVeins of golden pink granite run through the ridges at the south end of Niantic. Quarries cut the stone for buildings and monuments in many parts of the country, and the work went on until the 1950s.
- Named for the NehanticsLong before East Lyme existed, the Western Nehantics are the first people known to have made their home on this land, and their language was Algonkian. Their territory stretched west from the mouth of the Niantic River, which carries their name, all the way to the Connecticut River. In summer they camped by the river and along the Sound, where the water gave them plenty of fish and shellfish.
