About Nokomis, Florida

Nokomis is an unincorporated community of 3,217 people in Sarasota County, on Florida's Gulf Coast just north of Venice. The Knight family and at least 3 other families settled here in 1868. During the Civil War the Knights had raised cattle farther inland, out of reach of Union raids. When the fighting ended they moved toward the shore, hoping the coastal climate would be better for their health. The area, which then took in present-day Venice, was known as Horse and Chaise.

The first post office here was called Venice, a name picked by the Curry and Higel families. Darwin Curry ran it as postmaster from a spot south of Shakett Creek, on today's Portia Street. That office later moved to be nearer the new Venice train station, so a replacement opened close to the old site. Alfred F. Wrede established it in 1917 and gave it the name Nokomis.

  • Named for Hiawatha's grandmotherLongfellow's poem Hiawatha almost certainly gave the town its name. Nokomis is an Ojibway word, and it means grandmother.
  • The Knights' school and chapelKnight, head of the family that led the 1868 settlers, gave the land for the area's first school and helped put up its first chapel.
  • Dr. Albee's 130 lotsIn 1917 the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Fred Albee bought 112 acres from the Sarasota-Venice Company. Working with Ellis W. Nash, he split the land into 130 lots, with streets fanning out from two inner circles and from the new asphalt highway that later became U.S. 41. Albee and a group of investors put up the town's first luxury hotel on that highway, the Pollyanna Inn, which had 35 rooms.
  • 79 residents in 1939The Florida guide, first published in 1939, counted 79 people in Nokomis. It called the place a suburb of Venice, with Shackett Creek dividing the two towns. Today about 2.5 miles of the Legacy Trail run through Nokomis, crossing the water on the Shakett Creek bridge at Dona Bay.
