About Venice, Florida

Venice is a city of 25,463 people in Sarasota County, on Florida's southwest coast. Fishermen once called the spot Horse and Chaise, after a stand of trees shaped like a carriage, and in the 1870s Robert Rickford Roberts homesteaded beside the water now named Roberts Bay. Frank Higel, a Frenchman, arrived in 1883 with his wife and six sons and paid $2,500 for part of the Roberts land.

Higel opened a post office named Eyry in 1885 to serve the thirty people living here, but it closed that November, and the mail went back to Osprey. A new office opened in 1888 under the name Venice. Higel chose that name himself, because the area reminded him of the Italian city built on canals.

  • Higel's canned citrusOn his homestead, Frank Higel grew citrus and canned it in several forms. His products included jams, lemon juice, pickled orange peel and even orange wine.
  • A planned city in 1926In the 1920s Florida land boom, Fred H. Albee, a surgeon known for his bone grafts, bought 112 acres from Bertha Palmer and hired John Nolen to draw a master plan for the streets. Albee then sold the property to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the union kept Nolen on. Building began in 1925 and 1926, Venice became a town on July 1, 1926, and a charter change made it a city on May 9, 1927.
  • A fire engine from a hurricaneVenice formed its first fire department in 1926 with thirty-two volunteers. That same year the town got a new American LaFrance engine. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers paid for it and bought it from Moore Haven, where the Great Miami Hurricane had damaged it.
  • From one shelf to a libraryThe Venice-Nokomis Women's Club started the first library in 1926, with a few books on a shelf in a store. It moved several times before the Venice Area Public Library opened in 1965. Mold forced that building's demolition in 2017, and in 2018 the new William H. Jervey Jr. Venice Library took its place, named for a donor.
  • Shark's Tooth Capital of the WorldFossilized shark's teeth wash up in large numbers along the Venice shore, and the city celebrates them every year with its Shark's Tooth Festival.
