About Vamo, Florida

Vamo is a community of 2,822 people in Sarasota County, along Sarasota Bay. The land was known as Bayonne when two developers, Bessie Gibson, who came from Virginia, and A.A. Wren, from Missouri, bought it from Bertha Palmer's estate trust in 1923. They gave the place a new name by joining the abbreviations of their home states, VA and MO.

  • Homes by the bayA year after the purchase, Gibson and Wren had built 13 houses on Vamo Drive, right beside the bay. The Depression brought the building to a stop, and as late as 1936 the area had just 41 residents.
  • A 9-foot Tamiami TrailThe Tamiami Trail's first route passed through Vamo, running alongside the bay. The road was just 9 feet wide, so a driver meeting another car had to steer off the pavement to let it by, and the car that pulled over was often left stuck.
  • Spanish-style homesThe neighborhood is known for its historic Spanish-style homes. One of its streets, Mova Street, spells the town's name with its two halves swapped.
