About North Richmond, California
North Richmond is an unincorporated community of 4,175 people in Contra Costa County. The city of Richmond almost surrounds it. Long ago, Native people found food along Castro Cove and in the marshes where Wildcat and San Pablo creeks meet the bay. Salmon and trout once ran up those creeks. Most of the land was Karkin territory, on a border with the Chocheño.
Early in the 20th century the area was a rural place of farmers and fishermen, and many were Italian Americans. Then the Second World War brought shipyard jobs to Richmond. African Americans from the South and Midwest came west to take them, and many settled in North Richmond. In under five years it became a busy working-class neighborhood. Later, many residents worked in oil, on the railroads and in shipping.
- Settled by 4000 BCDigs show that people lived here by at least 4000 BC. Hokan-speaking people may have come first. The Ohlone arrived in the 6th century and lived by hunting and gathering, with plenty of seafood along the shore.
- Two churches for newcomersWartime families kept arriving from the South. McGlothen Temple and North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church gave them a familiar place to worship. The two churches helped turn a crowd of strangers into a community.
- The Bay Area's first neighborhood councilIn 1956 residents set up the North Richmond Neighborhood Council. It was the first one of its kind anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. Today the county runs the community, and residents speak to it through the North Richmond Municipal Advisory Council.
- Talk of joining a citySince the 1960s, the city of Richmond has talked more than once about taking in North Richmond. In the fall of 2011, nearby San Pablo asked its own residents by phone what they thought of the idea. It would give North Richmond direct representation and give San Pablo a shore on San Pablo Bay. So far North Richmond is still unincorporated.
