About Rollingwood, California

Rollingwood is a community of 3,015 people in Contra Costa County, next to the city of Richmond. It went up during World War II, when war work drew so many newcomers that Richmond, a city of 24,000 people in 1940, had more than 100,000 by 1945. Private builders put up its seven hundred houses with help from federal housing finance programs, which made the loans safer for banks and cheaper for buyers.

The federal government hired David Bohannon, one of the country's leading mass builders of homes, to develop the tract. Officials approved the construction loans only on the condition that no house be sold to African Americans, so Rollingwood began as an all-white neighborhood.

  • The Garys of Brook Way, 1952In 1952 Wilbur Gary, a Black Navy veteran who had worked in the shipyards and then as a building contractor, bought a house on Brook Way from another Navy veteran, Lieutenant Commander Sidney Hogan. He moved in with his wife and five children. Soon after, a mob of 300 white residents gathered outside, shouting slurs. They threw a brick through a window and burned a cross on the lawn.
  • A family that would not leaveThe Rollingwood Improvement Association protested the sale, and a group of white neighbors offered more than market value to buy the Garys out. The family turned the offer down and stayed in their home. KCBS San Francisco told the story in a radio documentary, Rollingwood USA, which aired on March 3, 1952.
