About Odessa, Texas
Odessa is a West Texas city and the seat of Ector County, with parts extending into Midland County. The 2020 census counted 114,428 residents. Shaped first by rail and livestock shipping, the community later became a center for oil, gas, and petrochemical activity.
- Railroad RootsThe community traces its start to the Texas and Pacific Railway's arrival in July 1881, when the site served railroad and livestock shipping needs.
- Oil EraThe county's first producing oil well opened on December 28, 1926; Penn Field followed in 1929 and Cowden Field in 1930.
- Rapid GrowthOdessa grew from 750 residents in 1925 to 5,000 in 1929 as oil development accelerated.
- Civic MilestonesOdessa became Ector County's seat in 1891 and incorporated as a city in 1927, electing S. R. McKinney as its first mayor.
- Cultural LandmarksThe city contains the nation's only museum devoted exclusively to the presidency and a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre at Odessa College.
