About Pacheco, California

Pacheco is a community of 4,183 people in Contra Costa County, between Martinez, Concord and Pleasant Hill. It began in 1857 on the bank of Walnut Creek, when George P. Loucks put up a warehouse a hundred and fifty feet long and W. K. Hendricks built a flour mill on land he bought from Loucks. In 1860 Hale and Fassett, joined by Dr. Carothers, bought the site and divided it into town lots. The town was named for Salvio Pacheco, who held the Rancho Monte del Diablo land grant.

Walnut Creek, then called Pacheco Creek, ran deep into Suisun Bay, so ocean ships could reach the town. Pacheco became the shipping port for grain from the Ygnacio, San Ramon and Tassajara valleys, and until nearly 1873 it was the county's commercial center. Fires, yearly floods and an earthquake wore the town down while silt filled Pacheco Slough. Many people moved to nearby Todos Santos, the town later named Concord.

“From the first it had one great enemy, and that was its location.”
History of Contra Costa County, 1882
  • Three fires and an earthquakeFire broke out in the village on August 11, 1860. On August 15, 1867, fire destroyed the Pacheco Flour Mills, and the worst blaze of all came on the morning of September 5, 1871. In between, the great earthquake of October 21, 1868, hit at eight in the morning and damaged the town's brick and concrete buildings.
  • A banner from Don SalvioWhen the Pacheco Fire Engine Company No. 1 was organized, the man the town was named for took an interest. On February 16, 1861, Don Salvio Pacheco presented the firemen with a banner trimmed in gold lace and crowned with a golden eagle.
  • A post office since 1859A post office opened at Pacheco in 1859 and ran until 1913, as the town lost its people to Concord. It reopened in 1955 and still serves Pacheco today.
  • Decided by one voteMartinez city leaders moved in January 2011 to annex the part of Pacheco north of State Route 4. Protests in March 2012 forced an election, and in August 2012 North Pacheco residents and property owners turned the plan down, 40 to 39. The 111-acre area stayed unincorporated, under the county Board of Supervisors.
