About Vine Hill, California

Vine Hill is a community of 4,323 people in Contra Costa County, about 2.25 miles east of downtown Martinez. The place takes its name from a vineyard on a small family farm owned by the Marzolo family. After the father died, the mother sold the part of the farm that held the grapes, and the Santa Fe Railroad then laid its tracks straight across the old vines. The railroad put a small station on that ground and called it Vine Hill, and the name stayed with the place.

  • A station on the vineyardLeo Marzolo's mother was widowed when he was three. She sold the vineyard part of the family farm for eighteen hundred dollars. Soon afterward the Santa Fe Railroad built a line through, and it paid thirty-six hundred dollars for a narrow right-of-way across the land where the vines had grown. The little railroad stop there became the station of Vine Hill.
  • Born under a fig treeLeo Marzolo was born on the farm on Washington's Birthday in 1887, under a fig tree in the vineyard. After his father's death the family moved to San Francisco, where selling the Sunday papers on the street was his first regular work, and his earnings helped his mother. He later ran his own studio in Chicago, and people in America and abroad came to know him as a master at bringing old paintings back to life.
