About Pajaro, California

Pajaro is a community of 2,882 people in Monterey County. It sits on the south bank of the Pajaro River, across from Watsonville. The name goes back to October 8, 1769. That day soldiers with the Portola expedition came upon a dead bird that the people living there had filled with straw. Some soldiers thought it looked like a royal eagle, so they named the stream Rio del Pajaro, the river of the bird.

John T. Porter started the Bank of Watsonville, the first bank in the Pajaro Valley. In 1888 he made a deal with everyone involved to lay out a new Chinatown in Pajaro, less than 50 yards from his own house. The river was the county line. That summer the buildings of Watsonville's Chinatown were lifted onto skids and dragged across it. The new Chinatown grew from a camp of single farm workers into a town of families, shops, civic groups, a temple and schools. Then a fire in 1924 burned most of its buildings.

  • A mansion from the 1840sThe Porter-Vallejo Mansion, at 29 Bishop Street, went up in the 1840s. It is the oldest building in Pajaro and has been remodeled several times. It was bought in 1991 and turned into a public library and senior center. It also runs a day-care for the kids of migrant farm workers.
  • Floods of 1995, 1998 and 2023The Pajaro River forms the north edge of the town and of Monterey County. Watsonville and Santa Cruz County lie on the far bank. Living beside the river has a cost. It flooded the town badly in 1995, again in 1998 and once more in 2023.
  • Its own services since 1984In 1984 the Monterey County Board of Supervisors set up the Pajaro-Sunny Mesa Community Services District. It runs the town's water, sewer, parks and street lights. From 1984 to 1990, federal grant money rebuilt and enlarged much of the local sewer system. The work fixed several health problems. It also brought sewer service out to the Bay Farms, Fruitland and Las Lomas areas.
