About Amesti, California

Amesti is a community of 2,637 people in Santa Cruz County, counted in the 2020 census. It takes its name from José Amesti, a Basque man who reached California in 1822 and became the grantee of Rancho Los Corralitos.

Amesti also held a Spanish land grant of 15,400 acres that took in the country around Pinto Lake. In 1844 he deeded it to his wife, Prudencia de Vallejo. Pinto Lake is named for Rafael Pinto, whose father, Serafin Pinto, served as alcalde, the chief civil officer, of Branciforte.

  • Portolá's camp in 1769When Gaspar de Portolá led his expedition through Alta California in 1769, his tired men stopped on the shore of Pinto Lake to rest and recover. Along the water grew enormous trees, unlike any that New World explorers had yet described. Father Juan Crespí named them palo colorado, Spanish for red wood, because their wood was reddish.
  • George Cleveland's ranchCharles Ford acquired the north part of Pinto Lake in 1861 and sold it a year later to George Cleveland. Cleveland put up the buildings and ran the 164 acres as a ranch. The County of Santa Cruz purchased that north portion in 1974 to protect the lake and keep it open for recreation.
