About Pantops, Virginia

Pantops is a community of 4,682 people in Albemarle County, on the far side of the Rivanna River from Charlottesville, to the east, and it includes Pantops Mountain. Peter Jefferson acquired the land that included Pantops Farm in 1746. When he died in 1756, the farm passed to his son, Thomas Jefferson, who gave it the name the whole area carries today.

  • Named for its viewsThomas Jefferson called the farm Pant-ops, a name built from two Greek words that together mean "all seeing." He chose it because the farm looked out over the village of Charlottesville and, farther off, the Blue Ridge Mountains.
  • A boys' school from 1879More than a century after Jefferson inherited it, the farm became the home of Pantops Academy, a Presbyterian school for boys. The academy opened in 1879 and taught students there until 1906.
