About Rio, Virginia
William H. Meriwether built Rio Mills on the south fork of the Rivanna River. In 1833, the Harrisonburg Turnpike was laid out to cross the river there. The first bridge at the site went up in 1836. Before that, people crossed the stream at two nearby fords. The bridge was rebuilt in 1860 and again in 1865.
During the Civil War, troops under General Custer moved toward Charlottesville. Stuart's horse artillery, led by Colonel Beckham, was stationed at Rio Mills. Its guns opened fire on the advancing column. Custer's men retreated until they reached their infantry supports at Madison Court House.
