About University of Virginia, Virginia

University of Virginia is a community of 7,909 people in Albemarle County, and it takes its name from the school at its center. Thomas Jefferson founded that school, and in 1819 the Virginia General Assembly gave it a charter. Jefferson also drew the plans for its first buildings, including the pavilions where its professors made their homes.

  • A World Heritage SiteThe United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization lists the University of Virginia as a World Heritage Site. No other school or college in the United States has been given that title.
  • Single rooms on the LawnJefferson set his professors' pavilions along the Lawn, with rooms for students in between. Students still sleep in those single rooms today. At the head of the Lawn stands the Rotunda, which served as the university's first library and is listed on the National Register.
  • 7,909 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 7,909 people living in the University of Virginia community.
