About Paradise Hills, New Mexico
Paradise Hills is a community of 4,329 people in Bernalillo County, on high ground that rises west of the Rio Grande valley. It has never incorporated as a city, and Albuquerque surrounds it on every side. The Horizon Corporation developed the land by selling lots that had not yet been built on. The Federal Trade Commission later found that the company's ads were false and misleading, and it ordered Horizon to pay money back to the people who had bought.
- Kirk Douglas filmed hereJoel Productions, the film company owned by Kirk Douglas, shot Lonely Are the Brave in Paradise Hills, and filming began on May 1, 1961. Back then, Horizon Land Corporation, a Tucson company, managed the land.
- Neighbors organized in 1963In April 1963 residents incorporated the Paradise Hills Community Association, and a group of Sandia Laboratory employees was among them. Bob Gall served as its first president. The members made plans for parks, a library, a swimming pool and a community center. The neighborhood's volunteer fire department had already trained at Sandia Base.
- Once called Desert GreensThe Paradise Hills Golf Course runs along the east side of the community. Before it took the community's name, it was known as Desert Greens Golf Course.
