About Pelican Bay, Florida
Pelican Bay is a community of 6,660 people in Collier County, on the Gulf of Mexico in North Naples. In 1972 the Collier family, who owned 2,330 acres of beachfront seven miles north of downtown Naples, joined with Coral Ridge Properties, a division of Westinghouse, to develop the land. The partners built a community that fits around the coastal habitat.
- Boardwalks over the mangrovesThe partners first weighed the conventional dredge and fill method of building on the coast. They brought in environmental specialists instead, who blended single family homes and low-rise villas into the habitat and set the high-rise condominiums back from the beach. A berm and boardwalk system gave residents a way to the Gulf that spared the mangrove forest.
- Westinghouse takes over in 1979Westinghouse bought the Collier family's interest in 1979. That same year the first demonstration home and sales center opened, and the Pelican Bay Foundation was formed.
- Gulf to Tamiami TrailPelican Bay stretches from the Gulf of Mexico east to the Tamiami Trail, with the city of Naples on its southern edge. Its population grew from 6,346 in 2010 to 6,660 in 2020.
