About Phenix City, Alabama
Phenix City is a city of 38,816 people and the seat of Russell County, set on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River across from Columbus, Georgia. The land once belonged to the Coweta Creeks. Once Columbus was founded in 1828, traders who wanted fewer rules crossed the river to the Creek towns, so the Alabama side earned a wild name early on.
The city began as two towns, Girard to the south and Brownville to the north. In 1871 the post office mixed Brownville up with an older town of that name in Tuscaloosa County and called it Lively instead, while the railroad depot went by Knight's Station. The legislature incorporated Brownville on February 23, 1883, and renamed it Phenix City on February 19, 1897, perhaps for the Phenix Mills in Columbus or for the mythical bird. Girard and Phenix City joined on August 9, 1923, under the Phenix City name.
- The Battle of Columbus, 1865On April 16, 1865, Union General James H. Wilson, whose troops had already swept through Tuscaloosa, Selma and Montgomery, struck Girard and drove its Confederate defenders over the river into Columbus. His men followed them across and captured Columbus as well. Some call the fight the last battle of the Civil War, and the state encyclopedia counts it among the last.
- County seat since 1934Russell County's seat was at Girard when the county was formed in 1832, then moved to Crawford in 1834 and to Seale in 1868. Phenix City became a second seat in 1926, splitting the county's business with Seale, and in 1934 it became the only one. In 1932 the part of the city in Lee County had been shifted into Russell County, and Lee County got the rural Marvyn area in return.
- Mills, beer and brickAfter U.S. troops burned his Eagle Factory, W. H. Young founded the Eagle & Phenix mills, and three shiploads of English workers came over to run them, most settling on the Alabama side. In the 1880s, Dutch and German settlers started a brewery in Girard, the Chattahoochee Brewery. The town grew known for its brickmaking, and in 1900 the Girard Cotton Mills, which belonged to Eagle & Phenix, became a corporation across the river in Alabama.
- A murder in 1954In the 1940s and 1950s, gambling, prostitution and organized crime ran the town, drawing many soldiers from Fort Benning. Albert Patterson of Phenix City won the race for state attorney general by promising to clean it up, but he was shot dead outside his Fifth Avenue office on June 18, 1954.
- All-America City in 1955After Patterson's murder, Governor Gordon Persons put Russell County under limited martial law on July 22, 1954, and it lasted until January 17, 1955. That year the city won the All-America City Award, and the film The Phenix City Story came out.
