About Smiths Station, Alabama

Smiths Station is a city of 5,384 people in southeast Lee County, next door to Phenix City. The community began in 1866, when a post office opened and the Central of Georgia Railroad put a station on its line, halfway between Columbus, Georgia, and Opelika.

In the early 1980s, U.S. Highway 280 was widened to four lanes between Opelika and Phenix City. With a fast road to jobs in both places, Smiths Station grew quickly into a bedroom community for Phenix City and Columbus, Georgia.

  • Named for Broadus SmithBroadus Smith, a local resident, gave the land for the railroad station, so the railroad named the stop Smith's Station in his honor. The apostrophe was later dropped from the name, and people who live here often shorten it to just "Smiths."
  • A city since 2001Smiths Station became an incorporated city on June 22, 2001. The new city covered a much smaller area than the census-designated place counted under the same name in 2000, and as of 2004 it was Alabama's second newest city, after Center Point.
  • Conway Twitty's high schoolThe country singer Conway Twitty, born Harold Lloyd Jenkins in 1933, went to Smiths Station High School and played baseball there. The school, home of the Panthers, now enrolls more than 1,800 students and ranks as the 11th-largest high school in Alabama. Its marching band has played in the Thanksgiving Day parade in Philadelphia.
  • Living on Georgia timeAlabama is legally on Central Time, but Smiths Station sits so close to Phenix City and Columbus, Georgia, that the town keeps Eastern Time in daily life, along with the rest of the area around Phenix City.
