About Robinwood, Maryland
Robinwood is a census-designated place of 7,397 people in Washington County, part of the Hagerstown Metropolitan Area. It covers 3.8 square miles, all of it land, and it is home to Hagerstown Community College.
Long before the college came, this was farm country. In 1903 Joseph Young bought 218 acres from Otho Bryan and built them up into Mt. Aetna Farm, a large dairy and poultry operation reached by a lane off Robinwood Drive. The farm most likely sold fresh milk and eggs to people in Hagerstown and sent more by railroad to markets in Washington and Baltimore.
- A first for Maryland in 1946Hagerstown Junior College opened its doors on September 10, 1946, and it was the first community college in Maryland to serve a rural area.
- 782 students in 1966Twenty years after its founding, the junior college moved to a new campus on Robinwood Drive. Classes began there on September 19, 1966, with 782 students enrolled. On July 1, 1998, the school took its present name, Hagerstown Community College.
- Growing since 2000The 2000 census counted 4,731 people in Robinwood. By 2020 the count had climbed to 7,397.
