About Rollinsford, New Hampshire

Rollinsford is a town of 2,597 people in Strafford County, on the Salmon Falls River across from Maine. The Newichawannock, an Abenaki band, once kept a village at the falls, where they strung nets across the river to catch salmon heading upstream. English settlers had come by about 1630, when this land belonged to Dover, and they called the area Sligo.

In 1729 it became a parish named Summersworth, because ministers preached here in summer. In 1754 it became a town, though a clerk's mistake left it spelled Somersworth. Textile mills rose at the two biggest falls in the 1820s and split the town in two. Great Falls kept the Somersworth name, and Salmon Falls was incorporated as Rollinsford in 1849 to honor the Rollins family. Their ancestor, Judge Ichabod Rollins, had been the state's first probate judge.

“Near this place lived David Hamilton of Westburn born in the parish of Cambuslang, Scotland in October 1620; captured by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester, England, September 3, 1651; Brought to America as a prisoner in chains on the "John and Sarah" in the same year; settled near here and married Annah Jaxson of Lanark, Scotland. Killed by Indians on September 28, 1691.”

  • A brick mill villageJames Rundlet of Portsmouth and partners formed the Salmon Falls Manufacturing Company on June 17, 1822, to make woolen cloth with river power. After fire destroyed the first factory in 1834, the company turned to cotton, and Boston investors bought it in the 1840s. They laid the village out as a street grid, with brick boarding houses to resist fire. Production ended in 1927, and the mills now hold studios for more than 100 artists.
  • Dry rules, then wet yearsThe mill's planners banned drinking among the workers and required them to go to church on Sunday. During Prohibition, though, the village sat next to temperate Maine and on the Boston & Maine Railroad line, so bars opened up, and for a short while Salmon Falls was known for free-flowing liquor.
  • One school for the town, 1937Paid for with Public Works Administration money, the Rollinsford Grade School opened in 1937, replacing the village school and two district schoolhouses. It was the first school designed by the Durham firm Huddleston & Hersey, and its working cupola was Eric T. Huddleston's signature. Behind it, a marble marker honors Obo II, a dog who died in 1895 and is considered the father of the American Cocker Spaniel. The school joined the National Register in 2015.
  • Vassar botanist, born 1881Born in 1881 and raised on a farm in Rollinsford, Edith A. Roberts became a botanist at Vassar College. There she planted an outdoor garden of native plants that has been called the country's first ecological laboratory. She later found that young green and yellow plant parts supply vitamin A.
