About Rosemont, Pennsylvania
Rosemont is a community of 3,507 people on Philadelphia's Main Line. Part of it lies in Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County and part in Radnor Township in Delaware County. Joshua Ashbridge's farm here was called Rosemont, and in 1863 he deeded land to the Pennsylvania Railroad for a station. The railroad honored him by giving the stop his farm's name, and the community took that name as its own. Trains still stop here today, on SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line and the Norristown High Speed Line.
- Rathalla, ready by 1891Joseph Sinnott, owner of Philadelphia's Moore and Sinnott distillery, bought 40 acres of the old Ashbridge farm in 1889. The Philadelphia architects Hazlehurst and Huckel designed his 32-room house, and his family could move in by the summer of 1891. Sinnott named it Rathalla, Gaelic for the chieftain's home on the highest hill. The house later stood empty until 1921, and it joined the National Register as the Joseph Sinnott Mansion in 1980.
- Seven students in 1921The Sisters of the Holy Child bought Sinnott's mansion in 1921 and opened Rosemont College inside it, a Catholic college of the liberal arts that admitted women. In those early years that one building held everything: student rooms, a convent for the nuns, a chapel, classrooms, a dining space and offices. The first class had seven students. Holy Child School at Rosemont, founded by the same order, stands next to the college.
- Robert Cassatt's BeaupreThe Beaupre neighborhood was once a 200-acre estate of that name, built for Robert Cassatt, son of Alexander Cassatt. Its original mansion now belongs to The Mansion at Rosemont, a community where seniors live, and the estate's French iron gates still stand at the entrances from Conestoga Road and South Ithan Avenue.
- Gothic Revival in 1894Rosemont's Church of the Good Shepherd, an Anglo-Catholic parish, worships in a Gothic Revival church built in 1894.
