About St. Davids, Pennsylvania
St. Davids is a community of 3,604 people in Delaware County, in the eastern part of Wayne on the Philadelphia Main Line, about 15 miles from Philadelphia. Radnor Township was first settled by the Welsh, and the community takes its name from Old St. David's, a small Episcopal church founded very early in the 1700s and named for Saint David, the patron saint of Wales.
In December 1935 a local group called the Wayne Committee for Civic Progress gave Radnor Township eight roadside signs, every one of them the work of designer Arthur Edrop. Two of them hung on standards beside the Lancaster highways, marking where St. Davids started and stopped. Each sign hung from an oak bar on a red cedar post, and a decorative Welsh dragon holding an ostrich feather sat atop every bar.
- Spelled without an apostropheThe old church is St. David's, but the community's name is correctly written St. Davids, with no apostrophe. The neighborhood has its own train station and shares the 19087 ZIP code with Wayne next door.
- Home of Eastern UniversityEastern University, affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, keeps its main campus in St. Davids. It is a four-year liberal arts university.
- A church built as money cameSt. Martin's Church in Radnor rose only as fast as its building committee could pay. Volunteers dug part of the foundation and basement in the spring of 1879, and the cornerstone went down on October 4, 1880. The first service came on the evening of August 14, 1881, the day after the congregation lost use of the schoolhouse, with chairs and lamps borrowed from neighbors and no plaster yet on the walls.
