About Savoy, Illinois

Savoy is a village of 8,857 people in Champaign County. It borders the city of Champaign and sits less than two miles from the University of Illinois main campus. In 1858 M. L. Dunlap settled here, planted his first orchards and set out his nurseries, and he sheltered them all with belts of forest trees. His fruit farm and nursery grew big enough to bring the railroad to a stop, and Savoy became a station.

The village takes its name from Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy, who visited the area in 1861. Local legend holds that she may have seen it from a train during her tour. The settlement around the Dunlap orchards stayed unincorporated for nearly a century, until Savoy became a village on April 10, 1956.

  • Apples by the tonThe county history held up the Dunlap orchards at Savoy as proof of what careful, well-funded fruit growing could achieve on the prairie. The trees M. L. Dunlap first planted in 1858 grew into orchards that shipped their apples out by the ton.
  • A hiding place in 1857In 1857 Mathias Dunlap opened his house to African Americans fleeing north on the Underground Railroad, giving them a place to hide along the way. The house stood on ground that is now Burwash Park.
  • Willard Airport next doorThe University of Illinois Willard Airport lies just south of the village and serves East Central Illinois. American Eagle flies from there to Chicago O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth.
