About Sebago, Maine

Sebago was first part of Flintstown, a grant made in 1774 to the surviving soldiers of Captain John Flint's company from Concord, Massachusetts. Flintstown became Baldwin in 1802. In 1826 the town split off from Baldwin and took its name from Sebago Lake. In 1790 Joseph Lakin of Groton built a cabin here, then brought his family.

A canal to Portland opened in 1832, and trade on Sebago Lake grew. By the early 1870s, trains brought visitors to a station on the lake. Steamboats then ferried them to landings around the shore. Inns, hotels and summer camps followed, and the town has drawn vacationers ever since.
