About Shutesbury, Massachusetts

Colonists settled here in 1735 and called the place Road Town. The name came from their first request to Boston, which asked for a road through country that had none. The town was incorporated in 1761 as Shutesbury, honoring former governor Samuel Shute.

  • Dark skiesShutesbury never put up street lights, so residents still enjoy a truly dark night sky.
  • A library that lends kayaksThe town library lends more than books and films. Members can also borrow kayaks, life vests and paddles to use at Lake Wyola.
