About Sunderland, Massachusetts

The land that became Sunderland was granted to the people of Hadley in 1673. They had to abandon it during King Philip's War. Forty years later the land, then called Swampfield, was granted again to 40 owners who divided it into lots. Settlers arrived about 1713, and the town was incorporated in 1718.

  • The town's namesakeSunderland was named for Charles Spencer, the 3rd Earl of Sunderland. He lived from 1675 to 1722 and served as Prime Minister of England.
  • Why the old name was droppedSunderland was first called Swampfield. Leaders changed the name to draw more settlers to town. Swampfield Road still keeps the old name alive.
