About Southington, Connecticut
Southington is a town of 43,501 people in Hartford County, set in a valley with a ridge on either side. The Tunxis people lived on this land before Samuel Woodruff moved his family down from Farmington in 1698 and became its first settler. The valley was then called Panthorn, a name written in a deed by 1706, and Farmington folks thought so little of its sandy plains that "poor as Panthorn" became a saying. In 1726 Farmington set the valley apart as its South Society, and in 1779 Southington was incorporated as a separate town.
Southington's industry grew out of a blacksmith shop in Marion. Micah Rugg opened it in 1818, and in 1839 he started turning out carriage bolts by hand, each man finishing about a hundred a day. The next year Martin Barnes, his partner, built a machine to cut the threads, the first of its kind, though the two never patented it. Seth Peck had made the first tinners' machines here in 1829, and in 1870 three tool makers merged as Peck, Stow and Wilcox, which had about five hundred hands by 1875.
“We are all blessed with a native place, one which we always love to revisit, and to which we may point with something of pride.”
- Rochambeau's camp in 1781Rochambeau's French army left Farmington in June 1781 and camped four days in Marion. Officers stayed at Asa Barnes's tavern, open since about 1765, where Barnes held a ball for them. Soldiers camped on the facing hill, called French Hill ever since. Rochambeau returned on October 27, 1782, heading home. After an 1836 fire, blacksmith and bolt maker Levi Frost rebuilt the tavern as Greek Revival, and the Levi B. Frost House joined the National Register in 1987.
- The state's first cementLuman Andrews bought his 1745 house in 1818 and found limestone on the land, and the ruins of a lime kiln still stand there. On Anson Merriman's farm, young Gad Andrews began the experiments in 1824 that produced Connecticut's first cement. Merriman later owned the Ebenezer Evans House, and his descendants still run Rogers Orchards. A mason at New York's Croton Reservoir judged Southington's cement the best of all.
- Paper bags and a libraryTwo inventors, J.P. Pultz and L.V. Walkley, built machines that made paper bags, and their Italianate brick factory, the Pultz & Walkley Company, produced 3 million bags in 1899. Lucius V. Walkley then put up a $5,000 challenge gift for a library, and the Classical Revival Southington Public Library opened on Main Street in 1902. Today it houses the Southington Historical Society.
- Microcosm of AmericaIn May 1942 the War Department chose Southington as the subject of a defense booklet, Southington, CT, Microcosm of America. Photographers followed residents to work, to church and into their homes, and thousands of copies fell from military planes over Nazi-occupied Europe to show what ordinary Americans were like. That same year Ann Hunt Spence painted the mural Romance of Southington in the town post office.
- A carousel from 1911Lake Compounce, which Southington shares with Bristol, opened as an amusement park in 1846. Tradition says the lake is named for John Compound, who drowned trying to cross it rather than walk around. Charles I. D. Looff built its carousel about 1890 for Savin Rock in West Haven. The carousel came to the lake in 1911, and no two of its horses share the same face or colors. The Lake Compounce Carousel joined the National Register in 1978.
