About Three Bridges, New Jersey
Three Bridges is a village of 321 people in Readington Township, Hunterdon County, on the South Branch of the Raritan River. It takes its name from the three original bridges that carried travelers over the river. Adrian Aten, one of the first settlers in the area, made his home between Centreville and Three Bridges around 1725.
Two farmers, John Vlerebone and Harriet Foster Cline, were among the original owners of the land here. They sold part of it to the Central Railroad of New Jersey for a rail line, and after 1864 they divided their land into lots along Old York Road.
- The South Branch LineThe Central Railroad of New Jersey laid its South Branch Line across land bought from Vlerebone and Cline. Ownership of that line later passed to the Black River and Western Railroad.
- The Lehigh Valley in 1875In 1875 the Lehigh Valley Railroad extended its main line into New Jersey through Three Bridges, building it under its Easton and Amboy Railroad subsidiary. Trains still use that route today, now owned by Norfolk Southern Railway.
- A busy railroad villageIn its busiest years, many freight lines hauling farm produce and several daily passenger trains stopped at Three Bridges. When the passenger service went away, many businesses went with it. The village still has a post office, a bank and a few other businesses, and a branch of the Hunterdon County Library System serves readers here.
