About Volo, Illinois

Volo is a village of 6,122 people in Lake County, Illinois. The village's own history says people have lived here for at least 160 years. The settlement was first known as Forksville, and it took the name Volo in 1868.

An early county list of taxpayers and voters shows farm families such as the Rosings, Stoffles and Simeses getting their mail at the Volo post office. The community stayed unincorporated for more than a century after the renaming, until it became a village on April 26, 1993. Today it is home to the Volo Auto Museum.

  • The Conservancy's first bogVolo Bog State Natural Area lies just past the village boundary. It was the very first land the Illinois Nature Conservancy bought.
