About Long Lake, Illinois
Long Lake is a community of 3,663 people in western Lake County, and its homes wrap almost all the way around the lake it is named for. The lake empties to the northwest through Manitou Creek into Fox Lake, one of the Chain O'Lakes of northern Illinois, and 0.60 of the community's 1.78 square miles are water. Most of Long Lake lies in eastern Grant Township, 46 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
- The railroad came in 1900Grant Township got its first railroad in 1900, when the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul pushed a branch line from Libertyville to Madison, Wisconsin. The villages of Fox Lake and Ingleside grew up with it, and Ingleside was given its name on November 12, 1901. Today trains stop at Long Lake station on Metra's Milwaukee District North Line, which runs between Chicago Union Station and Fox Lake.
- A lawmaker's home in 1918When the Big Hollow School wrote down the history of Grant Township in 1918, it named Thomas Graham, the township's representative in the state legislature at Springfield, as one of its important residents. Graham made his home at Long Lake.
