About West Pleasant View, Colorado

West Pleasant View is a community of 4,327 people in Jefferson County, between Golden and Lakewood. During the Colorado Gold Rush in 1860, George Pullman and several partners pieced together claims into the Cold Spring Ranch, which covered most of today's community. Pullman put up a stage station of hewn logs where South Golden and Mt. Vernon Roads now meet, and travelers on their way to and from the gold fields stopped there.

The ranch and his other ventures earned Pullman enough to go back east in the mid-1860s and chase his dream of a railroad sleeping car. Later owners kept the way station going, among them three generations of Jefferson County sheriffs. By 1908 the ranch belonged to three men, George C. Gilman, D.J. Myerpeter and E.E. Sherwood, and that year they formed the Pleasant View Development and Investment Company to build houses. Cecelia Prentiss built the first one.

“Pleasant View shall have a church of its very own”
Wikipedia
  • A church in 1931Susan Hubbard Martin, an early resident who had studied music at the University of Denver, set out to give the neighborhood a congregation of its own. Her church opened its doors with a dedication on February 8, 1931, under the name Pleasant View Community Church, and its chapel still stands at 805 McIntyre Street.
  • Golden's first building, movedThe Boston Company Store was the first building in Golden. In 1925 its logs were hauled to Pleasant View and rebuilt there, becoming the Old Homestead Restaurant, which opened with a service station and lodging units. Fire destroyed the restaurant and grocery in 1942, but the lodging court at 16100 South Golden Road survived, and the tiny station out front is the area's oldest freestanding gas station building.
  • A fieldstone home from 1924In 1924 Captain Leo Rundstein, then posted at Camp George West, started work on a bungalow at 16300 South Golden Road, made of fieldstone and cobblestone gathered nearby. The Romano family owned it for nearly a century, and Samuel and Albina Romano long ran the Golden Market next door. The Samuel and Albina Romano House is on the National Register.
  • Rock Rest and George MorrisonBert M. Lake, a Colorado National Guard quartermaster and state representative, built the Rock Rest dance hall and tavern at the old crossroads in 1921 and ran it with his wife, Daisie. The African-American violinist and bandleader George Morrison played there many times from the 1920s to the 1950s, and his band was the house band in 1926, 1928, 1945 and 1958.
