About Westmont, California

Westmont is an unincorporated community of 33,913 people in Los Angeles County, part of South Los Angeles and just east of Inglewood. In the middle of the nineteenth century its land, along with neighboring West Athens, belonged to Rancho Sausal Redondo, a grant of 22,459 acres that Antonio Ygnacio Avila received in 1837.

The name has nothing to do with a mountain, since Westmont has no hill at all. In 2009 Hector Tobar of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the community seems to have been named for its spot west of Vermont Avenue. It covers 1.8 square miles and shares a border with Vermont Vista, a part of the city of Los Angeles.

  • A county golf course in 1954Los Angeles County bought the Western Avenue golf course shared by West Athens and Westmont in 1954, after Supervisor Kenneth Hahn made the case for the purchase. It was renamed later for Chester Washington.
  • Ice Cube's home streetO'Shea Jackson, known around the world as Ice Cube, spent his childhood on Van Wick Street in Westmont. He went on to work as a rapper, actor, writer, producer and director.
  • 33,913 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 33,913 residents in Westmont, up from 31,853 in 2010.
