About Wheatland, California

Wheatland is a city of 3,712 people in Yuba County, about 12.5 miles southeast of Marysville. Wagon trains coming west on the Emigrant Trail, also called the Donner Trail, reached their first California settlement here, on land Don Pablo GutiΓ©rrez had received as part of a Mexican grant in 1844. GutiΓ©rrez was killed in 1845, and on April 28 of that year John A. Sutter, acting as magistrate, sold the grant at auction to William Johnson. The town still sits on what is called Rancho Johnson.

The town itself began in 1866. That year the railroad reached the spot, a post office opened, and C. Holland surveyed the lots. The very first building, a saloon, went up before the survey and was later moved to Main Street, across from the depot. Growth stayed slow for several years, and because the town had no way to guard against fire or enforce sanitary rules, its citizens asked for a charter. The Legislature incorporated Wheatland on March 13, 1874, under a board of five trustees paid one dollar a year.

  • Chinatown, driven out in 1886Wheatland had a large Chinese American community from the 1860s, and its Chinatown grew on the ground where the town's first saloon had stood. In February 1886 a series of violent confrontations forced every Chinese American resident out of town.
  • Mayor Edward Duplex, 1888Edward Duplex, a barber, won election as Wheatland's mayor in 1888, which made him the first Black mayor chosen by any city in the western United States. His original barbershop still stands on Main Street.
  • The Hop Riot of 1913In 1913 a clash in the hop fields near Wheatland turned deadly. Four men were killed and a Wheatland constable was shot, and martial law was in force before the fighting ended. Historians of farm labor still count the Hop Riot among the field's landmark events.
  • Birthplace of BushwhackerBushwhacker, the bucking bull who went on to win the PBR World Champion Bull title three times, was born in Wheatland.
