About Willimantic, Connecticut
Willimantic is a community of 18,149 people in the town of Windham, where the Willimantic and Natchaug rivers join to form the Shetucket. Samuel Ashley became its first settler when he bought land here in 1717, and the place was long known as Willimantic Falls. The river fell over 90 feet in less than a mile, and that power drew mill builders. A wool picking and carding mill opened in 1806, and thread mills followed from 1822. The village became a borough in 1833.
In 1854 a group of Hartford investors bought the Jillson Mills and formed the Willimantic Linen Company, which finished its first mill on the river in 1857. Its Mill No. 4, completed in 1880, was the first mill anywhere planned for electric light, and the biggest mill on earth when it opened. Thread made the place prosper. In 1860 it had fewer than 5,000 people, but by 1910 its population had passed 12,100. It became a city in 1893 and earned the name Thread City. The company became American Thread in 1898. The city rejoined Windham in 1983, and the mill closed in 1985 when the company moved to North Carolina.
- A library above the storeIn 1878 the Dunham Hall Library opened on the third floor, above the mill's company store. Wealthy shareholders gave its first 600 books, and by 1920 it held 7,000 volumes. It stayed open from 5:30 to 9:30 in the evening for every mill worker and anyone else in town, and it lasted until 1941.
- The footbridge of 1907The Willimantic Footbridge, built in 1907, carries walkers over a road, a railroad and a river at once. No other footbridge in the United States links two state highways.
- A hundred trains a dayTwo railroads reached Willimantic in 1849: the Central Vermont, running north from New London toward Vermont, and the Hartford, Providence and Fishkill, running east and west. A New York and New England line from Boston arrived in 1872. In the first decades of the twentieth century, up to a hundred trains a day came through town, and trolleys ran to Norwich from 1903 to 1936 and to Coventry from 1909 to 1926.
- Boom boxes since 1986When no marching band was available for the Memorial Day parade in 1986, residents brought boom boxes tuned to WILI, the local AM station, and marched to the radio instead. The Boom Box Parade now steps off every Fourth of July and has drawn national notice from the Washington Post.
- Frogs on thread spoolsThe Thread City Crossing opened over the Willimantic River in September 2000. Locals call it the Frog Bridge for its green bronze frogs, each eight feet high, perched on concrete thread spools. The spools stand for the mills, and the frogs recall a local legend, the Windham Frog Fight of 1754.
