About Olivehurst, California

Olivehurst is a community of 16,595 people in Yuba County, about 4 miles south-southeast of Marysville and close to where the Yuba and Feather rivers meet. The place once went by another name, and the California State Mining Bureau's map of 1917 still showed it as Denniston.

Most of its early settlers came from the Midwest during the Great Depression, hoping for good farmland, steady work and a better future. Locals called them Okies, after the families who fled the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma, and that is why some streets here carry the names of Oklahoma cities. A post office opened in Olivehurst in 1941.

  • Farm workers came firstThe Depression newcomers were not the first to arrive for work. They followed migrant farm workers whose families came from China, Japan, the Philippines and Mexico, along with Native Americans.
  • From fields to millsFarming carried the local economy for years. From the 1950s on, more and more jobs came from mills and factories, and today many residents drive to work in other towns.
  • Growing since 2010The census counted 13,656 people in Olivehurst in 2010. Ten years later the count had risen to 16,595.
  • Hometown of Phil BaughThe musician Phil Baugh is the best known person to come from Olivehurst.
