About Willis, Texas
Willis is a city in north central Montgomery County, eight miles north of Conroe. Its growth began around a railroad townsite donated in 1870, while lumber, farming, and related manufacturing long shaped the local economy. The 2020 census recorded 6,431 residents.
- Railroad TownsiteIn 1870, Peter J. and Richard S. Willis gave the railroad land for a townsite, and the rail line reached the community in 1872.
- First CongregationBlack farmers organized a Methodist congregation before the townsite donation, establishing the community's first church.
- Tobacco EraIn the late nineteenth century, the Willis area led Texas in tobacco growing and supported as many as seven cigar factories.
- Road and Lake GrowthInterstate 45 arrived in the early 1960s, while Lake Conroe construction later helped raise the estimated population to 1,457 in 1970.
- Home Rule CharterResidents adopted a home rule charter on May 10, 2008, after population estimates exceeded 5,000.
