About Aromas, California
Aromas is a community of 2,708 people that straddles the line between Monterey and San Benito counties, on the south side of the Pajaro River valley. Its roots go back to October 1835, when the land became the Mexican Rancho Aromitas y Agua Caliente. The Spanish name means Little Odors and Warm Water Ranch, perhaps for the sulphur spring at nearby Soda Lake.
In 1871 the Southern Pacific Railroad laid its tracks through the area and dug a tunnel nearby, so the settlement that grew up beside the line was first called Sand Cut. Around 1895 the town took the name Aromas, after the old rancho.
“The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake devastated Aromas, which sat near the fault line, and the original station structure was levelled in the temblor.”
- Gravel from the rail bedWhen crews dug the railroad right-of-way in 1871, they struck huge deposits of aggregate, and the railroad turned the spot into a quarry for its own use. The quarry shaped the town, where nearly everyone either worked at Granite Rock's Logan quarry or was related to someone who did. Graniterock, based in Watsonville, still runs the A.R. Wilson quarry in Aromas.
- Two counties, nearly evenThe 2020 census found 1,365 residents on the Monterey County side of Aromas and 1,343 on the San Benito County side. It is one of only four census-designated places in the state split between two or more counties.
- Tile made here since 1986Fireclay Tile has been making architectural tile in Aromas since 1986, alongside the quarry that built the town.
- Anzar High, opened in 1994Anzar High School, part of the Aromas-San Juan School District, opened in 1994. It takes its name from the Anzar family, pioneers of the area.
