About Billerica, Massachusetts
Billerica is a town of 42,119 people in Middlesex County, where the Concord and Shawsheen rivers cross its land. In the early 1630s a Praying Indian village called Shawshin stood here. In 1638 land along the Concord was granted to Governor John Winthrop and his deputy, Thomas Dudley, who named two great stones in the river the Two Brothers to mark where their farms divided. By 1652 roughly twelve families from Cambridge and Charlestown had settled at Shawshin, and because some had come from Billericay in Essex, England, they borrowed its name. Billerica became a town in 1655, sharing its incorporation day with Chelmsford and Groton.
The falls of the Concord at North Billerica gave the town its industry. In 1708 Christopher Osgood won the right to use the water there, provided he ran a corn mill. Francis Faulkner arrived from Acton in 1811 and began producing wool cloth, only the second business of its kind in New England. The Talbot brothers bought the old canal company's land by the falls in 1851, built their woolen mill in 1857 and stayed 100 years, closing in 1956. By the 1920s they rented about 150 houses to their workers, and the company library held 5,000 books.
“There is but one Billericay in England, and but one Billerica in the United States. While other names have been repeated in newer States, this remains our own.”
- Yankee Doodle in 1775On March 8, 1775, British soldiers in Boston seized Thomas Ditson Jr., a Billerica minute-man trying to get a gun, and claimed he had urged a soldier to desert. A day later they tarred and feathered him and marched him through the streets to Yankee Doodle. Billerica protested to General Gage and voted to find its old bayonets. The town now holds Yankee Doodle Weekend each September, and an elementary school in Pinehurst, where he lived, bears his name.
- The Manning ManseSamuel Manning built it on Chelmsford Road about 1696, likely the earliest house raised west of the Concord River. His family kept a tavern there from 1752 to 1800, and New Hampshire minutemen stayed the night on their way to and from the fighting of April 1775. William Manning wrote The Key of Liberty here in 1798. In 1899 landscape architect Warren H. Manning restored it, and the land he bought nearby became the Warren H. Manning State Forest.
- A railroad two feet wideIn 1877 the Billerica and Bedford Railroad opened with its rails only two feet apart, the narrowest track yet laid in the country. Crowds turned out to see its little engines, Ariel and Puck. Money troubles stopped the line after just a few months.
- Warm between sermonsIn the mid-1760s Billerica built the Sabbath Day House beside its meeting house, so churchgoers had a warm place to wait between the morning and afternoon services. A caretaker looked after it until 1818, when the town no longer needed it, and it became a private home.
- The Howe School of 1852Dr. Zadok Howe left the money for this school, which opened in 1852. Daniel G. Bean of Lowell designed it, giving its classrooms an early system for bringing in warm, fresh air. It began as a private academy, served as the town's high school from 1896, and in 2022 reopened as a home for local access television and community meetings.
