About Brandywine, Maryland

Brandywine is a community of 10,550 people at the southern edge of Prince George's County, where Maryland Route 5 and U.S. Route 301 meet. It took shape as a railroad village. The Pope's Creek line opened its first trains in 1872, and that same year William H. Early, a merchant who also served as postmaster, purchased 42 acres beside the tracks and put up a general store just west of them.

That parcel became the center of the village. Early kept buying land, and when he died in 1890 he held 3,000 acres around Brandywine, most of the village itself. In the early 1880s the Southern Maryland Railroad laid a second line heading southeast out of town, which made Brandywine a junction. While that line was being built, the population climbed to its peak of about 250.

  • Named by William H. EarlyEarly gave the town its name, and today's census area covers the land he once owned. The name is thought to recall the Battle of Brandywine, fought during the Revolution. Of all the stops along the Pope's Creek line, Brandywine was the only one that grew into a real railroad town.
  • A Rosenwald school in 1926Before 1872 the Freedmen's Bureau built a school for Black children here. In 1926 the one-teacher Tee Bee school took its place, built with help from the Julius Rosenwald Fund. It cost $2,800: public funds paid $2,250, the Rosenwald Fund gave $400, and the Black community raised $150.
  • An earthquake in 1877Around 4 p.m. on September 1, 1877, a small earthquake shook Brandywine. It measured 2.7 in magnitude.
  • Farm country for a centuryIn 1912 the Southern Maryland German-American Bank was chartered as the Bank of Brandywine. Even with Clinton and Waldorf growing on either side, Brandywine kept its rural character until the twenty-first century was well underway. The Brandywine Crossing shopping center opened in October 2008, and by 2016 it had grown to 800,000 square feet with 49 commercial spaces.
