About Friendly, Maryland

Friendly is a community of 9,937 people in Prince George's County, a few miles south of Washington, D.C. In the early 20th century the village had a rural post office of its own, and the country around it stayed mostly farmland until about 1960. Since then it has filled in with neighborhoods of single-family homes, and today its mail is addressed to Fort Washington.

Around 1900 the Providence Methodist Episcopal congregation decided to leave its first site in the Piscataway District and rebuild near Friendly, on Old Fort Road. In 1901 its trustees purchased a lot of one and a quarter acres, sold to them by Mary E. Sorrels, and the church's main block was completed in 1903. The congregation kept growing. It added a Sunday school wing around 1940, and by 1952 it had run out of room again.

  • A dairy on Bird Lawn FarmAround 1908 Alexander H. Terrett built a house on Stonesboro Road, on Bird Lawn Farm, which had been part of Henry B. Bird's large holdings. Terrett ran a dairy farm on the land, and the house later changed hands several times.
  • A congressman's Victorian detailsIn 1944 Frederick Crawford, a congressman from Michigan, bought the Terrett House. He and his family took apart a Victorian house in Saginaw, Michigan, and brought its stained glass, mantels and verandas to Stonesboro Road to renovate the old dairy farmhouse.
  • Friendly High SchoolToday most people know the Friendly name from Friendly High School, the public high school for most of the greater Fort Washington area. Children in the community also go to Rose Valley and Tayac elementary schools and to Isaac J. Gourdine Middle School.
