About Temple Hills, Maryland

Temple Hills is a community of 8,350 people in Prince George's County, with Oxon Hill, Camp Springs, Marlow Heights and Hillcrest Heights on its borders. The area was farm country until the 1930s. Then the federal government created new jobs in Washington, and the people who moved to fill them set off fast suburban growth across the county.

One of the early neighborhoods was Deer Park, drawn up around 1930 along St. Barnabas Road, where Temple Hill Road meets Hagan Road. Its roughly 80 small lots filled from the crossroads outward with small, plain wood-frame houses. By 1942 about 50 houses stood there.

  • Named for banker Edward TempleIn the 1860s Edward Temple, a banker, lived beside Henson Creek in a house called Moor Park. In 1880 he inherited a 700 acre farm here from his father-in-law, Dr. William Gunton, and the community later took its name from him.
  • Built from the 1950s to 1970sMost of the garden apartments, duplexes and single-family neighborhoods that make up Temple Hills today were built from the 1950s through the 1970s, as the suburban growth that began in the 1930s spread over the old farmland.
