About Silver Hill, Maryland

Silver Hill is a community of 6,381 people in Prince George's County, about 1 mile southeast of Washington, D.C. Its name goes back at least to 1829, when Jesse Ridgeway bought land under a deed that placed it within a tract named Silver Hill. That tract lay east of the old road running between Alexandria and Bladensburg. Before 2010 the Census Bureau counted Silver Hill and its neighbor together as the Suitland-Silver Hill census-designated place.

  • Aircraft on view in 1977The National Air and Space Museum kept and repaired its aircraft at a Smithsonian center in Silver Hill, about eight miles from the museum on the Mall. Free guided tours began on January 11, 1977, showing fifty-five display aircraft, among them a Hawker Hurricane IIC, a British World War II fighter, and the Messerschmitt 163B, the first rocket-powered plane in regular service.
  • A house older than 1829The Ridgeway-Hagen House on Summer Road appears to have been built in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Jesse Ridgeway bought the land in 1829, and his family made their living in the building trade: census records show four generations of Ridgeways working as carpenters between 1840 and 1930.
