About Hillcrest Heights, Maryland
Hillcrest Heights is a community of 15,793 people in Prince George's County, along the Washington, D.C. line. Much of its land was once Colebrook, an estate that Thomas Dent and William Hatton bought in 1671. Colonel John Addison bought it in 1688, and Colebrook Manor, the Addison family homestead, went up in 1808 in the Oxon Run Valley, just southeast of the District line.
The suburb came much later. In the early 1940s Anthony Carozza and his wife Anna Louise put together almost 800 acres. After the Second World War, veterans and federal workers came home and crowded into the area, so Carozza drew up the plan for Hillcrest Heights in 1946. Much of its water and sewer system was paid for out of his own pocket, and most of its ramblers and duplexes were built in the 1950s and 1960s.
- Iverson Mall, 1967Iverson Mall opened in 1967 as a two-level shopping mall. It drew shoppers from Maryland towns and from the Anacostia section of Washington, and the older Marlow Heights Shopping Center sits right beside it.
- Holy Family School, 1957Holy Family Catholic School opened in 1957 on an 11-acre campus in Hillcrest Heights and taught children from pre-K through Grade 8. It closed after the 2019 to 2020 school year.
