About Marlow Heights, Maryland

Marlow Heights is a community of 6,169 people in Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. Its name comes from Morris E. Marlow, whose father, William Beale Marlow, had started the Marlow Coal Company in 1858. Morris served as president of the family business and lived in the capital, but in 1921 he bought farmland in the western part of the county.

He kept that land until 1952, when three brothers from Cheverly, Frank, Alfred and Vincent Scuderi, bought roughly 167 acres from him. The brothers planned a whole new community there. By 1954 their first detached houses stood on Saint Clair Drive, and families began moving into the new suburb.

  • A record shopping centerResidents had waited years for the Marlow Heights Shopping Center, built on 36 acres. When it finally opened in June 1958, it was the largest center of its kind anywhere around the nation's capital. It grew again in 1960, when a Hecht's department store was added.
  • Iverson Mall in 1967In 1967 the shopping center gained a neighbor, the two-level Iverson Mall. It was the first enclosed mall anywhere in the Washington metropolitan area.
  • Temple Hills and SuitlandMarlow Heights covers 2.1 square miles, and it had 6,169 people at the 2020 census. Its mail goes to Temple Hills or Suitland addresses, and the Temple Hills Post Office itself sits inside Marlow Heights.
