About National Harbor, Maryland
National Harbor is a census-designated place of 5,509 people in Prince George's County, on the Potomac River just south of Washington, D.C. In 1827 Dr. John H. Bayne built Salubria Plantation on this land. Unlike most farmers in the county, he raised no tobacco there and kept to orchard fruit and garden crops, and the 1860 slave schedule counts 19 people he held in slavery.
The plantation house burned in 1981, and the land was sold in 1984. It was rezoned for mixed-use development in 1994, and Milton Peterson's Peterson Companies built a waterfront resort district on the site. The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center opened on April 1, 2008, and in 2010 National Harbor was split off from Oxon Hill as a census-designated place of its own.
- Camps older than the plantationBefore the Tanger Outlets went up, archaeologists studied Salubria, which sat on a ridge overlooking Carey Branch, a Potomac tributary. Beneath the plantation they found evidence that people had camped there briefly during the Late Woodland period. Ground was broken for the outlets on November 29, 2012, and the shops opened in November 2013, about a mile east of the waterfront.
- The slave quarters still standThe slave quarters are the last Salubria building left. In 2006 Peterson Companies dropped plans to put a Target store on that ground. In 2011 Bonnie Bick, of a group working to reinvest in the heart of Oxon Hill, proposed saving the building and making it a stop on a loop of historic sites along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.
- 2,000 rooms on the riverWith 2,000 rooms, the Gaylord National is the largest hotel in the Washington area and the largest between New Jersey and Florida. In 2014 the Capital Wheel, a 175-foot Ferris wheel, opened on a pier reaching out into the Potomac.
- MGM opens in 2016MGM National Harbor opened on December 8, 2016, south of the Beltway, after Maryland voters approved more gambling four years earlier. It holds a 300-room hotel, a 135,000-square-foot casino and a 1,200-seat theater.
